4 Signs Your Complete Dentures Don’t Fit Correctly

Smile now, pay later with Afterpay

Dentures have been saving people’s smiles for around 300 years, re-emerging as a prominent skilled manufactured product in the 18th century. Dentures traditionally come in two types: partial dentures or complete dentures. That is, sets of dentures that are designed for one particular area of the mouth – say the upper or lower jaw, or one side of the mouth or the other. Or, people can have complete denture sets created to the shape, size and fit of their entire mouth.

These complete dentures are often the most common among the elderly and people who have lost multiple teeth in both upper and lower jaws due to accidents, disease, or some other cause. Figuring out if a complete denture set is right for you means a visit to a denture clinic.

If you’ve already been to a denture clinic and have forked out a considerable amount of money already on the cost of dentures, getting a complete set of dentures for your troubles – and are now having problems – here are 4 signs that your complete dentures don’t fit you correctly.

1.   Painful Rubbing When Putting In & Removing

One of the first signs of denture problems is when you’re putting in and removing your dentures each day. This should be a painless process, but if you notice that the dentures are painfully rubbing on your gums, then it might be time to book an appointment at your denture clinic.

2.   Difficulty When Speaking or Eating

Speaking and eating can be difficult to adjust to when you first start wearing dentures, whether these are partial dentures, or complete ones – however – if you notice this after a few weeks of wearing your new dentures, then it may mean that they’re a poor fit for your mouth and need to be adjusted by a denture repair professional.

3.   Moving in Your Mouth

If your dentures are misaligned, they may move around when in your mouth – “chattering teeth”, so to speak. This means that the dentures don’t quite fit with the contours of your jaws and are going to need to be readjusted via emergency denture repairs.

4.   Bleeding of the Gums

This is a painful (and possibly urgent) consequence of ill-fitting dentures. If you notice that your gums are starting to bleed, it is critical that you get yourself to a dentist immediately to have them address this problem. Regardless of the cost of dentures, your dentist may be able to set you up with a better-fitting pair of immediate dentures, until your new dentures can be re-measured and re-fitted to your mouth – but this cannot be done until your gums heal properly. So, be sure to get to your dentist ASAP once you notice the bleeding.

What Will Happen if I Stop Wearing My Dentures?

Unfortunately, no matter if your dentures are partial dentures or complete dentures, you can’t exactly stop wearing them to fix the problem. Dentures that aren’t worn often dry out and deform even further. The more deformed your dentures become, the costlier their repairs will become. Don’t stop wearing your dentures altogether; get yourself to a dentist as soon as possible if you notice denture problems.

Find a Good Denture Clinic If You Have Complete Dentures

If you have complete dentures, it is absolutely critical that you find a good denture clinic. Before you embark on a denture journey, make sure you do your research on what the best denture clinic may be in your area. Read the reviews and research their reputations and technologies to ensure that they’re up to current standards. Finding a good denture clinic to care for you and your oral health during a time of uncertainty like getting dentures can make the world of difference.

Elias prepared a full set of dentures for my 90 year old mother. The service he provided was exceptional, using current technology effectively to create a set of dentures which were far superior to what she had previously had. Elias also made it very clear that my mother could go back at any time if minor adjustments were required. He gives meticulous attention to detail. Tamika ensures that appointments run to time. State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
