Adapting to life with removable partial dentures can be challenging, but you can maintain a healthy, confident, and active lifestyle with the right guidance and support. Here are some tips and adjustments for living with removable partial dentures, from maintaining oral hygiene to managing social situations and cultivating a positive mindset.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is crucial for those with removable partial dentures. Proper cleaning techniques include:

  • Brushing your dentures daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleaner.
  • Rinsing your dentures thoroughly after meals to remove food particles.
  • Soaking your dentures overnight in denture-cleaning solution to keep them fresh and moist.

In addition to cleaning your dentures, it’s essential to take care of your remaining natural teeth and gums by:

  • Brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly.
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle strokes to clean around the gum line and dental attachments.
  • Scheduling regular dental check-ups to monitor your oral health and ensure your dentures continue to fit properly.

Managing the Adjustment Period

The initial adjustment period with removable partial dentures can be challenging, but with patience and persistence, you can overcome these to enjoy the benefits.

First, gradually increase the wear time of your dentures. Start by wearing them for a few hours each day, and then slowly extend the duration as your mouth gets used to the new appliance. This process will help your oral tissues adjust to the presence of the dentures, minimising discomfort over time.

To improve speech clarity, try practising speaking exercises, such as reading aloud or repeating difficult words and phrases. These exercises will help you become more comfortable articulating words with your dentures.

Denture adhesives can provide added comfort and stability, helping to secure your dentures in place and preventing them from slipping or causing irritation to your gums. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for denture adhesives and consult your dental professional if you have any concerns.

Finally, remember the adjustment period is temporary, and any discomfort or challenges you experience will likely subside as you become more accustomed to your dentures. If you continue to face issues, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for support and adjustments.

Handling Social Situations

Navigating social situations while wearing removable partial dentures can be tough, but there are a few things you can do:

If you need to discreetly remove and store your dentures during meals or public speaking engagements: plan ahead by carrying a small denture container with you at all times. When necessary, excuse yourself to a private area, such as a bathroom, to remove your dentures and place them in the container.

If you’re feeling self-conscious about your dentures: focus on the positive aspects of your improved appearance and function with dentures. Remember, dentures are designed to enhance your smile and make everyday activities, like eating and speaking, more comfortable. And talk to friends and family, as they may be able to provide support and encouragement during your adjustment period.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial for embracing life with removable partial dentures. Strategies to boost confidence include:

  • Practising good oral hygiene to keep your dentures looking and feeling their best.
  • Focusing on the benefits of dentures, such as restored chewing ability and an improved smile.
  • Seeking support from other denture wearers or joining support groups to share experiences and advice.
  • Remember to view your dentures as a solution that enhances your quality of life.

Lifestyle Tips and Adaptations

Additional lifestyle tips and adaptations can help you make the most of your removable partial dentures:

  • Choose denture-friendly foods: Opt for soft, easy-to-chew foods, especially during the initial adjustment period, such as cooked vegetables, tender meats, and soft fruits.
  • Maintain a balanced diet: A nutritious diet supports overall health, including your gums and remaining natural teeth. Include a mix of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products in your meals.
  • Adjust to changes in taste or chewing: You may experience slight changes in taste or difficulty chewing with your new dentures, so eat slowly and cut food into smaller pieces.
  • Manage denture discomfort during physical activities: Ensure your dentures fit properly and use adhesives to prevent movement or irritation during sports or exercise.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking water throughout the day can help keep your mouth moist and alleviate any dryness or discomfort associated with wearing dentures.
  • Take breaks: Give your gums and jaw muscles a rest by removing your dentures briefly each day, as your dental professional recommends. This allows your oral tissues to recover and can help prevent sore spots or irritation.
  • Monitor your oral health: Regularly check your gums, tongue, and remaining natural teeth for any signs of irritation, inflammation, or infection. If you notice any issues, call your dentist right away.

The service he provided was exceptional, using current technology effectively to create a set of dentures which were far superior to what she had previously had. State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
