Dental Implants for Seniors: What to Consider

Smile now, pay later with Afterpay

A recent study on dental implant trends revealed that around 9% of cases are for patients aged 65 to 74. Dental implants are increasingly popular among seniors because they are easy to use, help them restore their smiles, and allow them to eat comfortably.

Why Dental Implants Are a Popular Choice for Seniors

Dental implants may be the best tooth replacement option for seniors today, but their use started about half a century ago as an alternative to bridges or dentures. Most people with dental implants agree they’re the best investment to replace missing teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Seniors prefer dental implants vs. dentures because

  • Dental implants improve oral functions – seniors can smile, speak, and eat more efficiently. These are more comfortable, allowing seniors to enjoy their daily lives.
  • Prevents the deterioration of the jaw bone—if nothing is done with tooth loss, the jaw bone can become weak and deteriorate, making it harder to wear dentures that fit well. Dental implants can prevent further worsening of the jaw bone by preserving its structure. They also help improve a person’s facial features.
  • Enhances self-esteem—Dental implants allow seniors to smile again, talk easily, and socialise, improving their self-esteem and giving them better self-confidence.
  • Eliminates oral discomfort—Dentures may be uncomfortable, especially when they don’t fit well. With dental implants, seniors can talk and eat without soreness and pain.
  • Reduces maintenance—Caring for dental implants is similar to caring for natural teeth; all you need to do is brush and floss them. There’s no need to use adhesives or cleaning solutions on implants.
  • Enhances speech—Dentures can slip and move, causing slurring or mumbling. Dental implants remain in place, allowing seniors to talk naturally and comfortably.
  • Guarantees durability—Dental implants are long-term solutions for tooth loss. With proper maintenance, they can last a long time.

Assessing Candidacy for Dental Implants in Seniors

Dental implants offer many benefits to seniors; however, only some are good candidates.

Adequate Jaw Bone Structure

Seniors should consider dental implants and bone density. Implants need sufficient jaw bone density to anchor them in place. An evaluation of bone mass will be conducted through X-rays or CT scans to identify adequate bone structure before the procedure.

Overall Health

Having good overall health helps you recover easily from dental implant surgery. Avoid smoking, take adequate rest and sleep, and eat nutritious foods to improve your health if you wish to undergo dental implant surgery.

Existing Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, and autoimmune disorders, can affect healing after dental surgery. It’s important to undergo a thorough dental and medical evaluation beforehand to help you manage your condition before the procedure.

Common Concerns for Seniors Considering Dental Implants

There are many benefits to using dental implants; however, there are also challenges and concerns that may affect seniors.

Length of the Procedure

A dental implant procedure takes about one to two hours, which may be uncomfortable for most seniors.

Recovery Time

Seniors and dental implant recovery time should always be considered. Compared to other dental treatments, healing from implants can take three to five months.

Potential Risks

The most common risk of dental implants is infection on the implant site. However, modern techniques, technology, and improved post-operative care have made the procedure safer and more efficient.

The Role of Bone Density and Bone Grafting

Osteoporosis affects one in five elderly women over 50 and about one in 20 elderly men. This condition can directly affect the stability of dental implants. Poor bone density due to osteoporosis can increase implant failure, which is where bone grafting can help.

Bone grafting in dental implants includes harvesting bone from another part of the body and using this as support for the implant. This procedure may extend the procedure time but ensures success in dental implant surgery.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which is Better for Seniors?

Seniors who are used to dentures may compare this to using implants. Which one is better when it comes to the following:

Stability

Dental implants can last long with proper care, while dentures need proper handling as they can easily crack, chip, or break.

Comfort

Although recovery could be painful, dental implants are generally more comfortable than dentures in the long run.

Ease of Maintenance

Dental implants are easier to maintain, as you only need to brush and floss them. Dentures require cleaning and soaking; they are fragile, so you must be careful not to drop or break them.

Seniors must weigh their options when choosing whether to use dentures or undergo dental implant surgery. With the guidance of an expert dentist, seniors can find the best solution for their needs.

The Recovery Process for Seniors After Dental Implants

Recovering from dental implant surgery takes months. During the first weeks, you will be on a soft diet to allow healing of the implant site. Your dentist will instruct you how to care for your implants and when to return for follow-up checks.

Regular follow-ups will help check the proper healing of the implant site. As the implant eventually bonds with the jaw bone, a small connector or abutment will be installed. This supports the implant site by avoiding pressure on the area. Complete healing is expected after two months.

Managing Existing Health Conditions During Dental Implant Surgery

Some chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or osteoporosis, can impact the dental implant process and may affect healing and oral health. For instance, seniors with uncontrolled diabetes may have extended healing times. Thus, they need to work closely with their primary care physicians and dentists to ensure proper healing and success.

Cost Considerations and Financing Options for Seniors

The most important factor to consider is the cost of dental implants for seniors. This involves several factors, including the implant cost, additional procedures (such as bone grafting), and the expertise of the dentist.

Financing Options

Seniors have several options for paying for dental implant surgery. They can use financing plans, discount dental plans, dental insurance, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) options, and a combination of options.

Insurance Coverage

Traditional insurance plans may cover dental implants. Seniors may check with their insurance provider for dental coverage, as this can vary from one provider to another. In most cases, seniors may have to pay for a large portion of the cost of the procedure.

Seniors may also get supplemental dental insurance that can provide additional coverage for dental implant surgery. This type of insurance supports existing dental insurance, helping seniors afford the procedure that will improve their lives.

Discounts for Seniors

Some dental offices may offer discounts and promos for seniors. They can pay out of their pockets for the procedure at a discounted rate or use their insurance to cover the rest.

Long-Term Care and Maintenance of Dental Implants

The key to the success of dental implant surgery is learning how to care for your implants every day.

Daily Oral Hygiene Practices

Regular brushing and flossing remove debris and food particles that can get stuck between the implants and the remaining teeth. Neglecting regular hygiene can cause plaque to build up, which can lead to gum disease.

Regular Dental Visits

Regular dental checkups help determine good wound healing and diagnose early onset of gum disease.

Diet and Alcohol

Seniors must eat a balanced diet to support good oral health. They should avoid a high-sugar diet and excessive alcohol, as these can affect healing and promote dry mouth.

Avoiding Grinding Teeth

During recovery, teeth grinding and biting hard food should be avoided. Dentists usually recommend a soft diet for the first weeks to ensure proper healing of the implant site.

With proper care and regular dental and health maintenance, dental implants may last 20 to 25 years or sometimes even longer. Complications are rare.

State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
