Everyone says that the best way to make a good first impression is to smile. But if your pearly white teeth are a lot less “pearly white” and a lot more “chippy brown”, you may not make the same impression with a pursed grin.
So how can you get a mouthful of pearly whites for that perfect smile? The good news is that cosmetic veneers are a relatively simple and painless way of fixing your smile.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are custom-made cosmetic coverings which are fitted over cracked, chipped, stained, or damaged natural teeth. While they’re similar to cosmetic fingernail appliques, dental veneers are actually designed to last for years if not decades when properly looked after.
These very thin ceramic or porcelain shells are made specifically for each patient for a brighter, better, and more beautiful look. They are then bonded to the front surface of the individual tooth with special dental cement so they can remain permanently attached.
Each veneer is slightly curved to cover the entire tooth face and tinted to a precise shade of white. And thanks to recent advancements in technology, veneers now seem even more natural as they can have the exact same translucent look as real teeth.
Not only are cosmetic veneers designed to suit each individual tooth, and closely mimic the colour of the other teeth, but they can even be used for any number of other desired changes as well. They can alter the length, width, or shape of each individual tooth, and ultimately change the entire smile line as well.
Why Would Someone Want Veneers?
People often decide they want to get veneers for many different reasons, including more than one of them. Most basically though, veneers are an excellent option for anyone who wants to cover any teeth which constitute some kind of cosmetic flaw with their smile. This is because veneers offer them the appearance of smooth, white, straight, and natural teeth.
Veneers can be used for misshapen teeth, crooked teeth, discoloured teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth, or tooth gaps, as well as general wear and tear that can come with aging. Or someone may decide to get veneers simply because they want their teeth to look different than they currently do.
Veneers are an especially good choice for someone with significant staining from say a lifetime of drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes. It allows people to keep their natural teeth, while still having more substantial cosmetic correction to their teeth than regular whitening treatments can offer.
What Does The Process Involve?
There are several appointments required in this process, so you should definitely plan in advance if you want veneers. At the initial consultation, your dentist will evaluate your teeth to ascertain whether you’ll be a good candidate for veneers before discussing your options. This involves taking an impression of your teeth, mouth, gums, and jaw, and may also require photographs, scans, and x-rays as well.
The technicians and ceramist at our onsite laboratory will then use the impression to begin porcelain construction in the shape and colour of your design. Once the veneer is ready around 1 to 2 weeks later, we apply a special dental bond to the veneer and adhere it to your existing tooth.
Once your veneer is correctly in place, we harden and set the dental bond by activating it with a curing light. Now that your permanent veneers are complete, it’s time to take your brand new smile out for a test drive!
