The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth: Options and Benefits

A 2021 study on the oral health of Australian adults revealed that 4% had lost all their teeth. This research also showed poorer oral health in Australians with lower socioeconomic backgrounds, possibly contributing to missing teeth.

Missing teeth, whether due to poor dental health or dental trauma, can negatively affect an adult’s oral health, appearance, and self-esteem. Replacing missing teeth is critical in adults, helping them resume their lives and improve their quality of life.

This guide explores the many options to replace missing teeth and the benefits of these techniques. We will also focus on how a dental professional can help you choose the best tooth replacement option.

Why Do You Need to Replace Missing Teeth?

Missing teeth can affect how you speak, chew your food, and interact with others. Here are the effects of missing teeth.

Oral Health Impact

Missing teeth leads to many oral health issues. They can make you prone to gum disease, as bacteria can spread easily to the gums. A lack of teeth can lead to bone loss, weakening the jaw, which supports intact teeth. If there is a gap, surrounding teeth will also shift to cover these spaces, which can lead to misalignment and bite issues.

Facial Structure and Appearance

When teeth are missing, the body reabsorbs bone tissue, gradually deteriorating the jawbone. As the jawbone shrinks, your face becomes sunken, making you look older. Over time, your face will sag, especially along the mouth and cheeks, changing your overall facial features.

Speech and Chewing Difficulties

Missing teeth can change the way you talk and pronounce words or sounds. You will also develop chewing issues, which leads to incorrect digestion as food becomes difficult to ingest. Missing teeth can lead to many digestive problems and may also cause malnutrition when nutrients in food are not efficiently absorbed.

What Are The Long-Term Consequences of Not Replacing Missing Teeth?

Missing teeth can have long-term complications such as the following:

Bone Loss and Jaw Deterioration

The consequences of missing teeth extend to bone loss and jaw health. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding jawbone deteriorates because of a lack of stimulation. Eventually, your jaw weakens, making applying corrective treatments such as dental implants and bridges difficult.

Shifting Teeth and Misalignment

The teeth surrounding the space may shift into the gap left by a missing tooth, leading to misalignment and bite problems. You will notice spaces developing in between teeth as remaining intact teeth start to fill the gap slowly. Remaining teeth may also move and become more prone to dental caries, gum disease and tooth loss.

Tooth Replacement Options: Why Choosing the Right Solution is Critical?

Your dentist can introduce you to solutions for missing teeth that fit your needs and budget.

Dental Implants

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically attached to the jawbone. These posts fuse with bone to become roots for artificial teeth. Restoring your smile with dental implants is easy, as they support crowns, dentures, or bridges.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants last longer and can help promote jawbone health, preventing bone loss. They look like natural teeth and work like natural teeth, too. Dental implants vs. bridges: The latter rely on surrounding teeth for support. Implants are independent and provide a better option for most patients.

Dental Bridges

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges can replace one or more teeth. They anchor to adjacent teeth or implants, creating a stable and functional filler that can restore the appearance and oral functions.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges offer a fixed solution for missing teeth, allowing you to talk, eat, and smile normally. However, your dentist may need to reshape adjacent teeth to accommodate the bridge, which can affect their health.

Dentures (Full and Partial)

Overview of Dentures

Dentures are removable solutions for missing teeth. Full dentures replace an entire arch of teeth, while partial dentures only fill gaps.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures restore teeth function at a fraction of the cost of bridges and implants. You can talk, eat, and smile with dentures. However, dentures require regular adjustments for the best fit and performance.

What are The Key Benefits of Replacing Missing Teeth?

It’s always best to replace missing teeth to avoid serious complications and restore oral functionality.

Restored Oral Functionality

You can restore your ability to chew, talk, and eat when you replace missing teeth. You can benefit from the food you eat as you can efficiently bite and chew your food. You can talk more naturally, speak and sound correctly with a complete set of teeth.

Improved Appearance and Confidence

Tooth replacement enhances your facial features. As artificial teeth fill gaps, these prevent a sunken appearance due to bone loss. You will restore your complete smile and keep you from ageing prematurely. Because of an improved appearance, you can feel more confident engaging with people.

Prevention of Further Dental Issues

As replacing missing teeth prevents natural teeth from shifting, you can avoid misalignment and bite issues. You also prevent gum disease and decay risks often in tooth gaps.

Long-Term Oral Health Maintenance

Various tooth replacement options, such as dental implants, preserve jawbone health. They provide the needed stimulation to avoid bone resorption and deterioration, contributing to long-term oral health and tooth stability.

State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
