The Process
The first of the two surgeries involves the surgeon placing the implants into the jawbone. An incision is made in the gum; a hole is then drilled into the bone and the implant is positioned in the hole.
The incision is then stitched closed and left to heal and fuse with the bone for anywhere up to 6 months. After your implants have been inserted, you should avoid putting pressure on the implants. Your surgeon will craft a temporary denture that you can use in the meantime.
Once your dentist is satisfied that your implants have fused to the bone you second surgery will be organised. This time, a small incision will be to expose the top of your implants. A healing cap is placed on each of the implants that will allow the gum tissue to heal properly.
Once your surgeon is happy with how your implants have healed since the addition of implant caps, an impression will be taken of your gums. This impression will then be used to make a model of your jaw; this will then be used to make your new dentures.
