According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, approximately 16% of Australia’s population is 65 years and older. As this demographic grows, many older adults are becoming more interested in enhancing their quality of life, including their dental aesthetics.

One of the most common concerns of seniors when it comes to improving the appearance of their teeth is using dental veneers. Are veneers a good option for seniors? Are veneers for older adults good for discoloured, worn-out and chipped teeth?

We will find answers to these questions and more. We also explore dental veneers and see if they are the best option for older adults.

What Are Veneers and How Do They Work?

Veneers are cosmetic dental treatments that cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. They can be used on one or several teeth.

Definition of Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells made of porcelain (ceramic) or composite resin (plastic or glass) attached to the teeth’ front surface to cover imperfections. They are non-removable and are fixed over intact teeth by a dental practitioner.

Purpose of Veneers

Veneers are the best choice to address a range of aesthetic concerns.

  • Covers discoloured or stained teeth
  • Minor misaligned teeth
  • Oddly-shaped teeth
  • Slightly chipped or broken teeth
  • Minor gaps

Veneers are not a good option for people who clench or grind their teeth and those with gum disease.

Common Dental Issues in Older Adults

Older adults are considering veneers for ageing teeth because of the most common dental issues. Connect Ability Australia reveals that older people have a higher rate of gum disease and tooth decay as seniors find it difficult to handle daily healthcare activities, including oral hygiene.

Aging and Dental Health

Elderly adults face the following common dental issues:

  • Tooth wear – seniors develop natural enamel erosion and wear due to chewing. This weakens and thins teeth.
  • Discolouration – due to years of eating and drinking staining foods and beverages, results in noticeable darkening of the enamel.
  • Receding gums – gum tissue recedes, exposing tooth roots. This can also lead to tooth sensitivity and pain.
  • Cracked or chipped teeth – wear and tear lead to chips and cracks which affect functionality and appearance of teeth.
  • Dry mouth – the elderly may develop reduced saliva production, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss.

How These Issues Affect Veneer Suitability

These age-related dental issues can impact the suitability of dental veneers for worn teeth. For example, cracks, chips or significant wear may require restorative work before installing veneers to ensure correct alignment and fit. Meanwhile, seniors with receding gums and dry mouths may need regular veneer adjustments to ensure long-term use and durability.

Are Veneers a Good Option for Older Adults?

Are veneers the best cosmetic dental option for older adults? The answer depends on the condition of existing teeth and gum health. Consult your dentist to determine if dental veneers are best for your needs.

Benefits of Veneers for Older Adults

Dental veneers for seniors can be a transformative solution. These can effectively and quickly restore the appearance of ageing teeth. Despite years of wear and discolouration, teeth will look whiter, healthier, and more vibrant.

Veneers can also make teeth look smoother, hiding imperfections and leading to a more refined and polished smile. This can boost confidence and improve self-image, especially for seniors who want to enhance their quality of life.

Unlike other dental treatments, veneers are non-invasive, painless, and can be accomplished in just a few visits to the dentist.

Durability and Longevity

With proper care, veneers can last 10-15 years or more. To extend their longevity, people who wear veneers must have regular dental checks, practise good oral hygiene, and avoid excessive stress on their veneers.

Considerations Before Getting Veneers

Older patients must consider several factors to ensure dental veneers are the best option.

  • Health of existing teeth and gums – veneers should be installed on healthy, intact teeth. Any dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, must be addressed beforehand.
  • Extent of dental damage – trauma and teeth grinding or crunching can cause excessive damage to teeth which may affect veneers installation.
  • Overall oral health – seniors with receding gums, gum disease and missing teeth may not be good candidates for veneer installation.

Your dentist can help gauge your suitability for wearing dental veneers. A thorough checkup, including dental health history and x-rays, can help determine if you’re a good candidate.

Alternative Cosmetic Options for Older Adults

Older adults who are not suited for wearing veneers may take advantage of the following alternative cosmetic options:

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a non-invasive procedure and a great alternative to veneers. Seniors with teeth discolouration can use teeth whitening kits at home or undergo professional procedures at a clinic.

This procedure uses a bleaching agent, such as carbamide or hydrogen peroxide, applied directly over stained teeth. Dentists also use an LED curing light to activate these agents, breaking them apart and enhancing their effectiveness.

Dental Crowns or Implants

Dentists may recommend installing dental implants or crowns for patients with more significant dental issues, such as missing or damaged teeth. Implants replace missing teeth by surgically installing a titanium post into the jawbone to support prosthetic teeth.

Meanwhile, dental crowns cover damaged or weak teeth to restore their function and appearance. You can eat, speak, and smile comfortably with dental crowns and implants.

However, individual considerations such as the health of existing teeth and gums, overall oral health, and the extent of dental damage should be discussed with a dentist.

State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
