If you own a set of dentures or a plate it is important that you know how to properly clean and look after your new set of teeth. Just because you have false teeth does not mean you give up on your teeth cleaning responsibilities. To prevent any health problems make sure you follow the instructions provided by your dentist.
To get you started our expert team have put together 3 effective tips to cleaning your dentures.
- Let them soak
Soaking your dentures is an important part of the cleaning process. Leaving your dentures to soak will help remove any debris and food build up that brushing won’t. This will also help to remove and stains and odour causing bacteria. To soak your dentures you will need a denture soaking tablet. Brands such as Polident are perfect for soaking dentures.Drop the tablet into warm water and let your dentures soak for the recommended time per the tablet packaging. Make sure you use enough water to cover your dentures. It is also important to make sure that you don’t use hot or boiling water to soak your dentures. If the water is too hot it can warp and change the fit of your plate or dentures. - Give them a good brush
Next you want to give your dentures a good brush. You can do this using a soft bristled brush and the solution you used to soak your dentures or plate. This will remove any remaining debris that soaking couldn’t budge.Make sure you don’t use toothpaste as this is too abrasive for dentures and can leave tiny scratches on your teeth that can build up bacteria. You can also use a special toothbrush specific to dentures if you prefer, it is slightly larger than a normal toothbrush but essentially does the same thing. If it also important to not use any bleaching products on your dentures such as whitening toothpaste or mouthwashes. These can change the colour of the gum section of your plate making it appear a strange white colour. - Rinse
After you have soaked and rinsed your dentures or plate you will need to give them a good rinse under clean water. This will ensure there is no debris, food or cleaning solution left on your dentures. You also don’t want any of the cleaning solution to get into your mouth.
