Whether you are new to wearing dentures or planning to invest in a new set, there have been advancements that make dentures look and feel more natural, and they last longer now too. However, if you want to get the most out of your dentures, you need to be willing to maintain them properly.

The Importance of Denture Care

When it comes to dentures, proper care is crucial to both ensure the appliance lasts and holds its appearance, but also to maintain good oral health. Poorly maintained dentures result in plaque build up in the same way poorly maintained natural teeth do. The risks are the same – when plaque is allowed to build-up, it can cause bad breath, but it can also lead to additional tooth loss and may result in gum disease.

Well-maintained dentures aren’t just good for overall oral health, they are also more comfortable and prevent ongoing maintenance issues.

Common Types of Denture Repairs

  •       Broken dentures

From drops to weakened materials and improper handling, there are a lot of ways to break or fracture your dentures. If the break is minimal, then a relining may be more than sufficient to address the issue. This involves a resin coating to rebond the fracture that will still reshape itself to your mouth for maximum comfort.

  •       Loose or ill-fitting dentures

Loose or ill-fitting dentures are uncomfortable, but they can also cause problems with chewing, sores, and other oral health problems. You should pursue denture repair if this is the case, as an adjustment should take care of the issue. In the meantime, you can use an adhesive to relieve some of your discomfort.

  •       Chipped or cracked denture teeth

If the denture repair is specifically for a chip or cracks in the denture tooth, then there are options available depending on the severity. Like natural teeth, poor maintenance or hard objects can cause cracks, chips, and fractures in teeth. A dental lab repair may be sufficient in the case of minor issues, but in some cases, the only option is a tooth replacement.

  •       Denture base repairs

Over time, the denture base can warp, shift, and fracture. This occurs for a wide range of reasons, but these issues need to be addressed by a professional dental technician. In some cases, the denture teeth can be removed from the old base and transferred to a brand-new base. This is a common outcome when dentures are dropped.

Preventive Measures For Avoiding Denture Repairs

  •       Proper denture cleaning and hygiene

Dentures are an investment so, be sure that you handle them with care to avoid damage. You should rinse dentures after every meal, water is more than sufficient to wash away loose food particles. As with natural teeth, you need to brush your dentures regularly. Use toothpaste that is denture-safe; and if your dentures aren’t in your mouth, be sure to soak them in water or an appropriate solution. Proper maintenance will prevent plaque build-up and help you avoid gum inflammation.

  •       Denture handling and storage

You must keep dentures moist so they keep their shape and always follow the instructions on the products you use. Before you put your dentures back in your mouth, rinse them well with water. Use a safe container to store them safely when necessary, this will help avoid damage from falls. If they feel loose or don’t fit comfortably, visit your dentist.

  •       Regular dental checkups

One of the most important requirements is regular checkups, so make sure you touch base with your dentist as often as they recommend. Regular checkups will allow your dentist to identify any problems early on and address repairs in a timely manner.

Elias prepared a full set of dentures for my 90 year old mother. The service he provided was exceptional, using current technology effectively to create a set of dentures which were far superior to what she had previously had. Elias also made it very clear that my mother could go back at any time if minor adjustments were required. He gives meticulous attention to detail. Tamika ensures that appointments run to time. State of the art technology and skills and ability to match. I went to the clinic highly anxious ( my previous dental encounter at another clinic resulted in a panic attack and blacking out twice whilst in the chair) due to the poor integrity of my teeth, as a direct result of a health condition I had lost the majority of my teeth and the remaining were nothing short of a train wreck. Elias treated me the utmost respect and kindness. Read more

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we offer two types of denture, complete and partial. Complete dentures are necessary when all your natural teeth are missing. A partial denture is used when some natural teeth remain. If you are having extractions, we can also provide you with an immediate denture. This is often an interim denture so you can avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth.

A denture usually lasts between five and seven years. Time and natural changes in the mouth will affect the fit and wear patterns of your denture. If your denture is worn and doesn’t fit as well as it used to, it may require a repair or reline. Having your denture checked every two years will help to ensure a proper fit and by following your denture care instructions, you’ll extend the life of your replacement teeth.

Dentures don’t last forever. Dentures usually last between 5 to 7 years and need to be relined every 1 to 2 years. Over time dentures become worn and don’t fit as well, so it’s important to reline them regularly. The better you follow your denture care instructions, the longer your replacement teeth will last.

It is advised that you visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean. This will help to prevent any major oral health issues from occurring. However, if you have bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, tooth or jaw pain it is advised to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

At Aesthetic Dental and Denture Clinic, we know attending the dentist can be difficult for nervous and anxious patients. We offer a number of options to help make your next visit as calm and stress-free as possible. Contact us today and a friendly dental technician will be able to give you all the options available.
