What are denture adhesives?
Denture adhesives are either a creams, powders, strips or pastes generally bought from the chemist or supermarket that are applied to the underside of your dentures. The substance then comes in contact with your gums when the dentures are put in place. The adhesive then creates a layer between the gums and dentures that stops them from slipping and sliding throughout the day. For many wearers it creates peace of mind throughout the day.
Which Type of Adhesive Is Best?
This all depends on personal preference and what is easier for you. Some adhesives such as creams and gels can be applied directly to your dentures with minimal fuss. Powders are a bit more work as they require you to mix them with water before being applied to the dentures. Strips, also known as seals, are also an easy option however do need to be cut to size and lightly wet before being applied. The adhesive will only work as long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
How Do You Remove Dentures With Adhesive?
If you are using a denture adhesive you need to make sure you still take your dentures out each night and give them a good clean. To remove your dentures give them a gentle pull and wiggle your denture back and forth, remembering to be very gentle. Always give your dentures and gums a good clean at the end of each day with a soft brush and mild soap or toothpaste.
Do I Need A Dental Adhesive?
This all depends on you. If you feel like you need a bit of extra grip and support than an adhesive will help ease your mind throughout the day. If you are using an adhesive because your dentures are hard to keep in place or are no longer comfortable, then you need to schedule an appointment with your dentist. Your dentures should always fit correctly with an adhesive not being a necessity. If that ever happens your dentist will be able to examine the problem and find you a solution to ensure your dentures fit comfortably.
